Typically, heel pain is felt by middle-aged men and woman, those who regularly partake in sporting activities and those significantly overweight and on their feet a lot. Heel spurs, bony and painful growths hidden under the heel bone, are a common cause of heel pain.
Heel pain and heel spurs are often associated with an inflammation of the long band of tissue along the arch of the foot known as the plantar fascia. This inflammation is called plantar fasciitis. Patients with plantar fasciitis usually complain of pain and stiffness in the bottom of the heel, especially in the morning or during long periods of inactivity. The pain experienced can be a dull, sharp or even burning/aching sensation along the bottom of the foot.
During a biomechanical assessment, our Podiatrists may recommend exercises/stretches, certain shoes, taping/strapping and anti-inflammatory medication. Special orthotics or arch supports may also be prescribed to help reduce pain and prevent further damage to the plantar fascia.
